LED wall and video technology: the practical guide to striking event visuals

An LED wall for your event? We explain pixel pitch, brightness and how to choose the right one – so your visuals look razor-sharp at every event.

Whether it’s a product presentation, a congress or a concert: the LED wall has long been the centrepiece of modern event visuals. Yet often only a few technical decisions separate an impressive stage from a pixelated makeshift solution. We show you what really matters.

Why the LED wall defines the image of your event

A screen with a projector is a thing of the past. LED walls are bright enough for daylight, can be scaled to any size and shape, and deliver a rich, high-contrast image even from the front row. They don’t just replace projection – they become a design element: as a stage backdrop, as an oversized content canvas or as a creative spatial boundary.

In short: a well-chosen LED wall conveys your message before the first word is spoken. A poorly chosen one costs impact – and budget.

Pixel pitch: the most important figure hardly anyone knows

Pixel pitch describes the distance between two LED dots in millimetres. The smaller the value, the finer the image – and the closer the viewer can stand without seeing individual pixels.

  1. Pitch 1.5–2.5 mm – for short viewing distances such as foyers, exhibition stands or stage backdrops that guests walk right up to.
  2. Pitch 2.9–4.8 mm – the all-rounder for conferences, galas and medium-sized halls.
  3. Pitch 5–10 mm – for long distances such as open-air stages, where the audience is at a distance anyway.

A simple rule of thumb: the minimum viewing distance in metres roughly corresponds to the pixel pitch value. A 3 mm wall looks perfect from about three metres.

Brightness: indoor is not the same as outdoor

Brightness is measured in nits (cd/m²). Indoors, 800–1,500 nits is usually enough, whereas an outdoor wall in direct sunlight can easily need 5,000 nits or more so that it doesn’t look washed out. Anyone who puts an indoor wall outside risks pale images – and costly fixes on the day of the event.

Mobile or modular – which system is the right fit?

  • Mobile LED walls come as a ready-made totem or on wheels and are ready for use in minutes. Ideal for smaller areas, roadshows and quick setup and teardown.
  • Modular walls are assembled from individual tiles and can be built in almost any size and shape – including curves and free-standing structures. This is where our stage and rigging experience comes into play, because large walls have to be safely flown or ground-supported.

The most common planning mistakes

Most problems arise long before the event: a pixel pitch that is too large for viewers close up, forgotten spare modules, badly prepared content in the wrong aspect ratio or an underestimated power load. We catch exactly these pitfalls with thorough advance planning – as we also describe in our event technology checklist.

Buy or hire?

For most events, hiring is the smarter choice: you get exactly the system that suits your event, without investing in technology that will be outdated in two years. You can read about the advantages in detail in our article Hire or buy? You can get lighting, sound, video and staging for your event here: event technology hire. You will also find our complete range of equipment in our rental shop on pho-ton.de (in German).

On the safe side with photon

We don’t just supply the wall, but the whole picture: selecting the right system, streaming and video connectivity, signal distribution, content checks and live video direction. That way, your video technology works not just on paper, but also when the audience is sitting in the hall.

Our motto

“An LED wall impresses not with its size, but with the right image at the right time.”
